Wear the carrier empty first to adjust the basic fit without the weight of plates or additional gear.
Next, insert the chosen hard plates into the front and back of the plate carrier. Armor plates come in different materials, like ceramic, polyethylene, and steel, and each has its characteristics. Read more about the hard armor plate materials to choose one that matches your needs.
Here are some tips about plate positioning/insertion.
1. Plate pockets are usually found on the front and back of the vest/carrier and secured by flaps or zippers. Open these compartments fully to prepare for plate insertion.
2. Plates are designed to fit a certain way. Most plates have a top and bottom, and sometimes a front and back. The curve should match your body’s shape, with the thicker edge at the bottom for the front plates. Ensure you’re inserting the plate with the correct side facing outward.
3. Gently slide the plate into the pocket, similar to how you would insert a letter into an envelope. Be careful not to force the plate in. The plate should slide in smoothly if it’s the correct size for your carrier.
4. Make sure that the top of the front plate should sit at the level of your collarbone, while the back plate should be at the same height as the front.
By doing this, your vital organs in the chest area will be protected without restricting your neck movement.
Besides, the bottom of the plate should sit above your navel so that you can bend and sit without trouble.
5. Repeat the same process for each plate you need to insert, whether it’s just the front and back or includes side plates as well.
6. After adjusting the plate, close the pocket flap or zipper securely. Double-check to make sure the closure is tight and secure, with no parts of the plate exposed.
